US raw steel production falls after two weeks of increases: AISI

Domestic raw steel production in the US was 1,720,000 net tons in the week leading up to Friday May 17, while capacity utilization was 76.6%, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).Broken down by districts, production stood at 751,000 tons in the South, 540,000 tons in the Great Lakes, 253,000 tons in the Midwest, 116,000 tons in the Northeast and 60,000 tons in the West, for a total of 1,720,000 tons.
Production increased by 0.6% from the corresponding period of 2024, when output was 1,709,000 tons and capacity utilization was 76.9%.
Production fell by 1.1% from the previous week ended May 10, when production was 1,740,000 tons and the capacity utilization was 77.5%.
Adjusted year-to-date production through Friday was 32,786,000 tons, at a capacity utilization rate of 75.0%, down by 0.8% from the 33,043,000 tons in the corresponding period of 2024, when the capacity utilization rate was 76.1%.
Please note the year-ago and year-ago-to-date figures reflect revised data published by the AISI this week; as a result, those numbers may not align with the crude steel production chart published by Fastmarkets, which utilizes data released by the AISI in previous years.
