Hot-rolled coil prices in the US Midwest slipped to around $920 per short ton on Monday May 5, with buyers continuing to remain on the sidelines of the spot market.

Fastmarkets’ daily steel hot-rolled coil index, fob mill US Midwest was calculated at $46.07 per hundredweight ($921.40 per ton) on Monday, down by 0.92% from $46.50 per cwt on Friday May 2 and 1.45% lower than $46.75 per cwt a week earlier on April 28.
Inputs were collected in both the buyer and seller sub-indices in a range of $44.25-48.75 per cwt, representing deals, offers and general assessments of the spot market.
Nucor lowered its weekly consumer spot price announcement on Monday to a base price of $45.50 per cwt for its hot-rolled products, down by 2.15% from $46.50 per cwt a week earlier.
Market participants continued to depict a quiet spot market, as buyers continue to approach the market with caution amid economic uncertainty.
Mills have begun to adjust offering prices lower in response to the lack of consistent buying interest in recent weeks, sources said.
Lead times remain reported at three to five weeks.
Quote of the day We are feeling some weakness on the market at the moment as the general economy is shrinking. I do not see much of a change in the near future as we approach the summer doldrums, a trader source said.
