Hot-rolled coil prices in the US Midwest rebounded above $900 per short ton on Monday, June 30, despite limited buyer interest due to elevated mill offers. Fastmarkets’ daily steel hot-rolled coil index, fob mill US Midwest was calculated at $45.17 per hundredweight ($903.40 per short ton) on Monday, June 30, up by 1.51% from $44.50 per cwt on Friday, June 27. The index is also 1.51% higher than it was a week earlier, on June 23, when it was also calculated at $44.50 per cwt.
Inputs were collected in both the buyer and seller sub-indices in the range of $44-46 per cwt, representing deals, offers and general assessments of spot market activity.
Heard in the market Nucor increased its weekly consumer spot price in an announcement on Monday, to a base price of $45.50 per cwt ($910 per ton) for the steelmaker’s hot-roll products for the remainder of this week, up by 1.11% from $45 per cwt on June 23.
Market participants continued to illustrate a sluggish hot band market, as purchasing has been limited in recent weeks.
Despite the lack of buyer interest, mills have responded by holding firm or escalating offering prices, using the elevated 50% Section 232 tariffs as support, sources said.
Sources continued to report short lead times at around three to four weeks.
