Soaring temperatures in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) continued to hamper ferrous scrap collection in the country, sources told Fastmarkets in the week to Wednesday May 28.

Temperatures in the UAE have soared to record highs of over 51 degrees Celsius over the last week, reducing the ability for manual work during the height of the day.
Demand from UAE mills is not great, but there is a shortage of material because there is too much heat, a UAE seller source said on Tuesday.
Temperatures are going high to unusual levels for May and this is affecting collection volumes, a UAE steelmaker source said.
They added that the market was still in surplus, however, and it was generating more scrap than needed by local buyers.
Indications of workable prices for sheared HMS 1&2 (80:20) were heard in the UAE local market at 1,220-1,225 dirhams ($332-334) per tonne delivered, but limited trading was heard.
The same grade was heard offered this week at $380-385 per tonne CFR Port Qasim, Pakistan, with standard HMS 1&2 offered $10 lower.
Fastmarkets’ weekly steel scrap sheared HMS 1&2 (80:20 mix), index, domestic, delivered UAE was calculated at 1,222.50 dirhams per tonne on Tuesday, edging down from 1,226.38 dirhams per tonne week on week.
Prices for scrap to Pakistan have been inflated by the recent imposition by major shipping lines of an emergency surcharge on containers shipped into the country. This followed trade dislocations earlier this month during a period of heightened tensions between Pakistan and neighboring India.
Local workable prices for shredded scrap were heard at 1,300-1,320 dirhams per tonne delivered.
Offers for UAE shredded scrap were heard at $390-395 per tonne CFR Port Qasim, while UK-origin shredded was heard sold early in the week at $382 per tonne CFR.
Fastmarkets’ steel scrap, shredded, index, domestic, delivered UAE was calculated at 1,309.33 dirhams per tonne on Tuesday, slightly up from 1,307.70 dirhams per tonne week on week.
