Gerdau Long Steel North America announced in a letter to customers on Friday June 6 that it was increasing its rebar prices in the US by $3 per hundredweight ($60 per short ton). The rebar manufacturer also raised its prices for 20-foot-length rebar by an additional $2 per cwt ($40 per ton).
The announcement follows an identical price increase from CMC on Thursday June 5.
All orders confirmed by close of business June 6 [2025] will be price protected if shipped by June 22 [2025], the Gerdau letter stated.
Gerdau last raised their rebar prices by $2 per cwt in a letter to customers on February 11.
Fastmarkets last assessed steel reinforcing bar (rebar), fob mill US at $39 per cwt on Wednesday June 4, flat since going up by 5.41% on February 12 from $37 per cwt on February 5.
Domestic and import rebar prices were steady on Wednesday, with sources reporting continued stagnant demand in a hesitant market weighed down by widespread economic uncertainty in the US.
The spread between domestic rebar and No1 heavy melt Chicago scrap was $498.75 per ton on Wednesday.
Fastmarkets’ monthly assessment of the steel scrap No1 heavy melt, delivered mill Chicago was last assessed at $315 per gross ton ($281.25 per short ton) on Thursday, flat from May 9 and down by 11.27% from $355 per gross ton ($316.96 per short ton) on April 9.
If the announced price increases are accepted by the market — even partially — then mill margins will widen in the near future.
In fact, margins are estimated to be nearly $20 per ton higher than last year.
With rebar assessed at $780 per ton, conversion costs estimated at $300 per ton and No1 heavy melt, delivered mill Chicago assessed at $315 per gross ton ($281.25 per short ton), margins are assumed to be around $198.75 per ton at the moment.
A year earlier, the margin was down by around $20 per ton, because domestic rebar price tags were lower, while No1 heavy melt scrap was the same price as the prior June.
At end of June 2024, rebar was assessed at $760 per ton, while No1 heavy melt, Chicago was $315 per gross ton ($281.25 per short ton) and the conversion was also estimated at $300 per ton.
