Russian mining and steel company Severstal relaunched basic oxygen furnace No. 1 after a Rb1.63 billion ($20 million) upgrade at its Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works, the company’s spokesperson told Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, on May 14.
Severstal has completed the overhaul of BOF No. 1, replacing the furnace’s vessel shell and trunnion ring, which had been manufactured by the company’s own Tyazhmash heavy engineering and machine-building center.
“The need to make key elements of metallurgical production units in-house boosts the competencies of the company’s engineering and repair teams and allows us to eliminate dependence on foreign manufacturers and suppliers,” said Evgeny Vinogradov, director general of Severstal Russian Steel division.
The furnace had been suspended since the beginning of April 2025 to carry out this set of works, which are due once every 10 years.
When it is operating again, CherMK will utilize three BOFs of approximately the same capacity, which together produced 9.3 million mt of crude steel in 2024, according to the company’s spokesperson.
