Hot-rolled coil prices in the US Midwest edged lower on Wednesday, June 25 in muted trading amid a summer slowdown due to seasonal outages by steel consumers in key economic segments, according to market participants. Fastmarkets’ daily steel hot-rolled coil index, fob mill US Midwest was calculated at $45.03 per hundredweight ($900.60 per short ton) on Wednesday, down by 0.18% from $45.11 per cwt on Tuesday, June 24 and by 1.55% from $45.74 per cwt a week earlier, on June 18.
Mill spot market offers were collected in the range of $44-45 per cwt in the buyer sub-index.
Inputs were rolled over in the buyer sub-index to minimize day-to-day volatility, and inputs were rolled over in the seller sub-index due to a lack of liquidity.
Heard in the market Efforts by mills to push spot-market prices higher with increases in offer prices appear to be losing steam amid a summertime slowdown in demand, a buyer said.
Lead times are 3 to 4 weeks, sources said.
Quote of the day “It appears that the flurry of buying activities to lock in the great deals a couple of weeks ago are done,” a steel buyer said.
