China‘s finished steel exports stable in April on trade turmoil

China’s exports of finished steel stopped their month-on-month increase in April, but increased year on year, according to preliminary data published by General Administration of Customs on Friday May 9.China exported 10.46 million tonnes of finished steel in April, unchanged from March, but up by 13.4% from 9.22 million tonnes in April 2024.
The total exports were 37.89 million tonnes in the first four months of the year, up by 8.2% year on year from 35.03 million tonnes.

China imported 522,000 tonnes of finished steel in April, up by 4.4% month on month from 500,000 tonnes in March, but down by 20.9% year on year from 660,000 tonnes.
The imports totaled 2.07 million tonnes in first four months of 2025, down by 13.6% year on year from 2.41 million tonnes.

The export market uncertainties caused by tariffs from the United States led to decreased export volumes in April, sources said.
Buyers outside China aren’t sure whether their countries will impose anti-dumping duties on China’s cargoes. Foreign buyers are assessing the influence on the downstream products which have been imposed tariffs by the US, an exporter based in China said.
