* Covers DRI plant, 2 EAFs, rolling and rebar mills
* Delivery slated for late 2026 or early 2027
* Follows order for first rebar mill in Oct 2024

Greensteel Australia awarded a A$1.6 billion ($1.01 billion) deal to Italy-based steelmaking technology provider Danieli for the second and third stages of the former’s proposed ultra-low-carbon steel mill, the Sydney-based company said April 11.
“The order…comprises a direct-reduced iron plant, two electric arc furnaces, a structural steel rolling mill with high-speed rail capability, and a second rolling mill for reinforced steel (rebar),” it said.
The deal follows an initial order, also awarded to Danieli, fora single rebar rolling mill in October 2024.
Delivery of the three mills — two EAFs and a DRI plant — is expected by late 2026 or early 2027, Greensteel Australia said.
“Among the new facility’s capabilities is the capacity to produce ultra-long sections required for high-speed rail, currently not manufactured in Australia,” it said.
“The DRI plant can operate on hydrogen rather than coking coal to refine magnetite into iron pellets, enabling a cleaner steelmaking process,” it said.
In February 2025, Greensteel Australia said it was assessing locations with access to a suitable power supply for its new plant, which it plans to have operational by the end of 2026.
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, assessed the 16-32 mm BS4449-grade 500 rebar at $460/mt CFR Southeast Asia April 14, stable from the previous session.
