US Midwest HRC index rises above $960 per ton

Hot-rolled coil prices in the US Midwest rose above $960 per ton on Wednesday April 9 as trading remained below underlying demand, sources said. Fastmarkets’ daily steel hot-rolled coil index, fob mill US Midwest was calculated at $48.08 per hundredweight ($961.60 per short ton) on April 9, up by 0.38% from $47.90 per cwt on Tuesday April 8, and up by 1.91% from $47.18 per cwt on April 2.
Inputs were collected in the range of $45.00-48.50 per cwt in the buyer sub-index, representing mill offers and general assessments of the spot market activity.
Inputs were rolled over in the seller sub-index due to lack of liquidity. Heard in the market Spot market activity has slowed over uncertainty on tariffs, while underlying demand from steel buyers is ahead of last year’s levels, according to sources.

Lead times remain extended at four to eight weeks. Quote of the day “I am seeing a definite slowdown in the steel market as far as inbound sales. I think the ‘panic’ buying is over and people are settling down waiting to see how these tariffs will affect the steel industry,” a distributor said.
